A few months back we got to thinking, how many mums and dads can truthfully say that becoming a parent has been exactly what they imagined? Yes, us neither, and that’s why we decided to create a quiz where you can find out the statistics behind what parenting is really like. Subsequently we decided to have a chat with a handful of parent bloggers to hear exactly how their expectations of being a parent lived up to the realities… so without further ado, please welcome mummy blogger, Becky from http://cuddlefairy.com/

Hey Becky, thanks for chatting to us today. Can I start by asking you to tell our readers a little bit about yourself and your family?

B: Thanks so much for having me! I am originally from NY & have been living in the West of Ireland for the past 11 years. My husband is Irish – that’s what brought me here! We have 3 kiddies aged 10, 7 & 4. I write a blog called Cuddle Fairy which is a parenting & lifestyle blog that focuses on positivity. I believe that your mindset really is everything!

What data from our parenting expectations quiz surprised you most and why?

B: The most surprising part was that kids are most costly from the age of 1 – 4. I thought it would be more costly at college age.

Is there anything that sticks out in your memory that came as a big shock when you became a first time mum?

B: Lack of sleep stands out the most. I hadn’t given that much thought to what newborns require. The good news is that it didn’t last that long with our first as he started sleeping the night at 9 weeks old. I figured our second born would follow suit but he had very different ideas & didn’t sleep until he was 2.

If you need any parenting advice or tips, where do you go to look for this?

B: Google! Lol The most thing I googled was breastfeeding related questions. I found La Leche League very helpful as well as a few other sites. I also have two good resources in my mother & mother-in-law.

Do you have any advice you can share with other first time mums and dads?

B: To enjoy your baby. The time, when you are in it, goes quite slow. Those first few months can be a blur. But somehow, like the click of a finger, your baby is turning 1. So despite the lack of sleep or eating normally, soak up those newborn cuddles & savor each little milestone because the first year really does fly by.cuddlefairy3

Your blog focuses on all the positive parts of parenting, what do you enjoy writing about most?

B: At the moment, my travel posts are my favorite. We love to travel as a family. Even if it’s just an hour down the road to visit somewhere beautiful, I love to document our day. I started Cuddle Fairy’s YouTube channel last year where I have created some fun travel videos too. I think anything can be an adventure, even if it’s in your own backyard like the time we climbed to the top of the big hill behind our house. You don’t have to spend money to have a little adventure with the kids. All you need is your imagination.

What inspired you to become a parent blogger and is it something you look at doing for the rest of your life?

B: I was slow to get onto social media but when I started I really enjoyed it, especially Twitter! I saw a lot of bloggers tweeting & thought there was space for a positivity blog. Cuddle Fairy focuses on the positive side of having a family & all that comes with that. My blog has enriched me personally in so many ways so I do see myself continuing to blog in the future!

If you’re kids were to look back at this in 20 years, what would you like to say to them?

B: I hope that they look back on their childhood lovingly with the thought that their parents did their best. No parent is perfect, but I hope that if we all do our best & keep the best interest of our children at heart then we are being great parents.

We love that your blog focuses on the all the positive parts of parenting.., but if you are having a bad day, what is the one thing that can turn your mood around in an instant?

B: A hug or smile from any of my 3 kids! Or a little joke from them. They are so precious & the highlight & focus of my life. .They bring me so much love & joy. 🙂
